Wheelchair and Stretcher Transportation in Volusia County

Volusia County, Florida, is experiencing a significant demographic shift as its senior population continues to grow. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, 24% of Volusia County residents are 65 and older, totaling approximately 538,692 individuals. This marks an increase from 16% in 2010.  

Along with those people with mobility issues, the growing surge in senior population has heightened the demand for specialized transportation services, particularly for wheelchair and stretcher-bound individuals requiring access to and from hospitals, emergency rooms, and skilled care facilities.

Disparities in Transportation Access

Approximately 14% of Volusia County seniors are receiving Medicaid benefits while approximately 86% of seniors do not qualify for Medicaid and their associated subsidized transportation services.  However, while those seniors receiving Medicaid benefits are entitled to free assisted transportation to include wheelchair and stretcher transportation, such services are not readily available for those seniors not qualifying for Medicaid and, therefore, must pay out-of-pocket.    

Because of this lack of access for those not qualifying for Medicaid, Volusia Medical Transport is committed to helping those seniors overcome the challenge in securing necessary mobility assistance by offering greater access and a cost-effective solution.

In addition to helping bridge the gap for those having to pay privately for wheelchair and stretcher transportation, Volusia Medical Transport is helping hospitals, emergency rooms, skilled nursing and post acute facilities to accomplish their mission by providing discharge transportation.  This helps limit the cost for unnecessary care or lengthy stays at the hospital.  

Volusia Medical Transport also continues to work with local government agencies and organizations to help raise awareness, address concerns, and discuss solutions for meeting the growing needs of our senior population.
